Volcanic eruption started in the Reykjanes-peninsula, about an hour ago.
Around 13:25 today, a volcanic eruptions started in the Reykjanes peninsula approximately 50 kilometers from Reykjavík. Lava flows into Merardalir Valley, but almost a year has passed since the eruption around Fagradalsfjall mountain, which is closed to Merardalir, stopped.
There has been a lot of seismic activity in the area in recent days, the strongest was 5,5 in magnitude.
„The eruption just started,“ a representative of the Grindavík police said when Mannlíf contacted. According to the policeman, no roads have been closed as of yet. „We haven´t started anything like that, yet.“
A representative from the Keflavík International Airport, which is on the Reykjanes peninsula, said that the volcano hasn´t had any affect on flights as of yet.
